Christopha and Florence: New Beginnings in Becoming Self-Sufficient

Christopha and Florence are farmers benefiting from One Acre Fund and Latter-day Saint Charities.

Christopha and Florence Amolo Indusive have been married for 25 years. They have seven children, six of whom are studying in school.

They live in Kakamega, Kenya, where they are smallholder farmers farming maize on several acres of their own land.

Florence and Christopha joined One Acre Fund after they visited a neighbor’s home where they saw two benefits of joining the fund.

First, they both admired the quality of the maize that this neighbor was growing. The stems were greener and healthier than their own crops.

Second, Florence admired the solar lights that her neighbor had received from One Acre Fund. With six children studying for school, she spent a lot of money each month on kerosene for the family’s lamp so they could study for long hours. A solar lamp could reduce that cost and let her children study longer.

They decided to enroll with One Acre Fund.

Latter-day Saint Charities partners with One Acre Fund because of its commitment to long-term self-sufficiency and the focus that it has on sustainable food production. When a farmer starts, he or she purchases seeds and fertilizer on credit. He or she is also given training on better farming techniques and coaching about how to best sell the crops.

In the case of Florence and Christopha, they hope that this investment in their farming will allow them to reap large benefits. They’ve never harvested more than two bags of maize from their crops before. Already they’re seeing maize that look healthier than previous years.

One of Christopha’s biggest hopes for this year’s crop is that it will allow him to spend more time with his family. He does manual work for different farmers in the area and gets paid on a daily basis for doing things like cutting sugarcane. If the harvests from the family’s One Acre Fund crops yield more bags of maize, he hopes to be able to start planting a more robust family garden.

Latter-day Saint Charities is proud to partner with One Acre Fund to support smallholder farmers like Florence and Christopha. To learn more about how Latter-day Saint Charities supports food security, visit the Benson Food and Agriculture information page.
